Who we are

The Italian Ministry of the Environment has promoted the creation of the Italian Phosphorus Platform, with long term objective of achieving self-sufficiency in the phosphorus cycle on a national basis and coordination with European policies and strategies. Phosphorus is a critical raw material for Europe, showing an almost total dependence on imports from non-European countries and a very low recycling rate from end-of-life products, as shown in the table below:

The Minister has identified ENEA as Manager of the Platform, built with Italian stakeholders active on the management and recovery of phosphorus (research centers, public and private institutions, companies and enviromental association).

The Italian Phosphorous Platform brings together companies, institutions and associations aiming to close the loop in phosphorus cycle, listed as critical raw material for Europe due to their economic importance. The main long term scope is to reach the Italian self-sufficiency in phosphorus supply.

The platform approach is based on circular economy principles, closing the loop in whole value chain and it is structured into 4 work groups addressing the issue with different points of view:
